Rabbi Johanan HaSandlar, also known as Johanan the Shoemaker or Johanan the Sandalmaker, holds a unique place in Jewish history as one of the key students of Rabbi Akiva and a contemporary of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. His humble title, HaSandlar, may suggest that he earned his living as a shoemaker, but it could also refer to his origins in Alexandria, Egypt. Regardless of its meaning, the simplicity of this title reflects a profound lesson embedded in Rabbi Johanan’s life—a commitment to humility and hard work, both in the spiritual and physical realms.

Rabbi Johanan lived during the second century CE, a time marked by intense Roman oppression and the destruction of the Jewish Temple, a period that required tremendous resilience and leadership from the rabbis of that generation. As one of the tannaim, the sages whose teachings were preserved in the Mishnah, Rabbi Johanan contributed to the spiritual strength and continuity of the Jewish people in an era of great uncertainty. His teachings continue to be studied today, a testament to the timeless relevance of his wisdom.
Rabbi Johanan HaSandlar was a great-grandson of Rabbi Gamaliel the Elder, himself a prominent sage and leader. According to tradition, Rabbi Johanan traced his lineage back to King David, placing him in the long line of leaders who carried forward the legacy of Jewish royalty and spiritual leadership. Remarkably, Rashi, the great medieval commentator, is considered a 33rd-generation descendant of Rabbi Johanan, linking this humble yet revered figure to one of the most influential Torah scholars in Jewish history.
One of Rabbi Johanan’s most famous sayings is recorded in Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers), a collection of ethical teachings and moral guidance. In Pirkei Avot 4:11, Rabbi Johanan teaches, “Every assembly that is for the sake of Heaven will survive; but if it is not for the sake of Heaven, it will not survive.” This teaching offers a profound insight into the nature of human endeavors. Rabbi Johanan emphasizes that true success, whether in communal gatherings, personal efforts, or spiritual pursuits, depends on the purity of intention. When an action is done with a genuine desire to fulfill HaShem’s will, it will endure. However, if it is driven by ego, self-interest, or superficial motivations, it is destined to fade. This teaching speaks to the heart of Jewish ethics, reminding us that our deeds must be aligned with a higher purpose to create lasting and meaningful impact.
As a student of Rabbi Akiva, one of the most important figures in Jewish history, Rabbi Johanan was part of a generation of sages who shaped the transmission of the Oral Torah. Rabbi Akiva’s teachings, which emphasized the transformative power of Torah study and the importance of love and unity among Jews, deeply influenced Rabbi Johanan’s approach to his own leadership. This close connection to Rabbi Akiva placed Rabbi Johanan at the forefront of Jewish thought during a time when preserving and transmitting Torah wisdom was critical for the survival of the Jewish people.
Rabbi Johanan HaSandlar’s connection to the land of Israel is another significant aspect of his life. He was buried in Meron, a sacred burial site that also houses the tomb of his contemporary, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. Rabbi Johanan’s resting place is only a short distance from that of Rabbi Shimon, highlighting the closeness of these two giants of Torah and their shared mission to safeguard the Jewish tradition. Every year, Jews from all over the world visit the tombs of these great sages, seeking their blessings and drawing inspiration from their lives of holiness and dedication to HaShem.
Rabbi Johanan passed away on the 29th of Tammuz, which is also the yahrzeit of Rashi. The coincidence of their passing on the same day is a powerful reminder of the connection between these two towering figures of Jewish history. Both Rabbi Johanan and Rashi played vital roles in ensuring the continuity of Torah learning, and their legacies remain intertwined through the generations of Jews who continue to study their teachings.
The life of Rabbi Johanan HaSandlar teaches us that greatness is not only found in positions of power or fame, but in the consistent dedication to spiritual and communal service. Whether he was a literal shoemaker or whether his title referred to his place of origin, Rabbi Johanan represents the ideal of a person who worked with his hands while simultaneously reaching great spiritual heights. He reminds us that even the most humble occupations can be filled with holiness when approached with the right intentions.
His famous saying from Pirkei Avot continues to inspire those who seek to live with purpose, reminding us that actions done for the sake of Heaven endure beyond their immediate impact. Rabbi Johanan HaSandlar’s teachings, life, and legacy continue to be a source of strength for the Jewish people, guiding us toward a life of humility, purpose, and deep connection to HaShem.
May the merit of Rabbi Johanan HaSandlar protect us all, and may we continue to learn from his wisdom and be inspired by his dedication to Torah and the Jewish people. May his merit protect us. Amen.
