Today I stood in a place tied to one of the most quietly heroic moments in Tanach—the story of Yael and her husband Chever HaKeni kever.

Chever was from the descendants of Yitro, a righteous outsider connected to Am Yisrael. He pitched his tent on the edge—between safety and danger, between neutrality and covenant. When the time came to choose sides, Yael stepped forward.

As Sisera fled the battlefield, he entered Yael’s tent, assuming he was among allies. But Yael understood that neutrality in the face of evil is betrayal. With calm clarity, she brought him in, offered milk, waited until he slept—and then, with a simple tent peg and a fierce, steady hand, she ended his reign of terror.

The Shirat Devora doesn’t just praise her—it elevates her above all women:

“תבורך מנשים יעל… באוהל תברך”

“Most blessed of women is Yael… may she be blessed in her tent.” (Shoftim 5:24)

She didn’t lead armies. She didn’t raise her voice. She protected klal Yisrael with decisive action from inside her tent.
