Shir HaMa’alot: The Soul’s Ascent Toward Parnassa, Protection, and Blessing

If parnassa feels uncertain, Shir HaMa’alot offers a divine pathway from struggle to stability. Within these fifteen psalms lie the promises of protection, clarity, and blessed livelihood.

Ascending Toward Blessing

Shir HaMa’alot, the fifteen Songs of Ascents (Psalms 120–134), form one of the most beloved and spiritually powerful units in all of Tehillim. These psalms describe a journey from fear into safety, from worry into trust, and from constriction into blessing. Our sages explain that they were sung while ascending to Yerushalayim or while rising step by step in the Beit HaMikdash, reminding us that every movement toward Hashem brings us to a higher place inside ourselves.

The emotional arc of these psalms mirrors the inner process of parnassa avodah. Many women begin in a place of distress or uncertainty, feeling the weight of their responsibilities and the fear of not having enough. As the chapters continue, the tone lifts into protection, provision, family blessing, and peace — exactly the elements of a stable and healthy livelihood.

Several psalms inside Shir HaMa’alot speak directly to parnassa. Psalm 121 promises Hashem’s constant guarding “in your going out and your coming in,” a verse many women recite for work, travel, and daily sustenance. Psalm 126 evokes the movement from sowing in tears to reaping in joy, a powerful metaphor for anyone who has invested tremendous effort while praying for Hashem to complete the blessing. Psalm 128 is considered a classic segulah for parnassa because it describes the labor of one’s hands being blessed, the home flourishing, and the table filled with light.

These psalms have been used in Jewish homes for centuries as a way to bring blessing into physical life. Many communities recite Psalm 126 before Birkat HaMazon on Shabbat and Yom Tov, infusing every meal and every form of sustenance  with the energy of ascent. Others recite specific Shir HaMa’alot chapters during times of financial uncertainty, before important meetings, or when seeking stability and clarity.

Spiritually, Shir HaMa’alot teaches that parnassa is not only a material experience but an inner journey of rising above fear. Each psalm becomes a “step” in transforming stress into trust and shifting the heart from survival mode into connection with Hashem. When we walk this arc with sincerity, the psalms become more than words, they become a ladder of emuna.

If your heart is asking for stability, support, or a gentler emotional space around livelihood, Shir HaMa’alot can be a powerful companion. These psalms bring your concerns into a language of ascent, reminding you that every effort is seen, every tear is counted, and every prayer becomes part of your own inner journey upward. Hashem meets you on each step and blesses the labor of your hands as you rise.

Psalm 120

1A song of ascents. In my distress I called to the Lord, and He answered me. 2O Lord, save my soul from false lips, from a deceitful tongue. 3What can He give you, and what can He add to you, you deceitful tongue? 4Sharpened arrows of a mighty man with coals of brooms. 5Woe is to me for I have sojourned in Meshech; I dwelt among the tents of Kedar. 6For a long time, my soul dwelt with those who hate peace. 7I am at peace, but when I speak, they [come] to [wage] war.

Psalm 121

1A song for ascents. I shall raise my eyes to the mountains, from where will my help come? 2My help is from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. 3He will not allow your foot to falter; Your Guardian will not slumber. 4Behold the Guardian of Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. 5The Lord is your Guardian; the Lord is your shadow; [He is] by your right hand. 6By day, the sun will not smite you, nor will the moon at night. 7The Lord will guard you from all evil; He will guard your soul. 8The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in from now and to eternity.

Psalm 122

1A song of ascents of David. I rejoiced when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the Lord." 2Our feet were standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. 3The built-up Jerusalem is like a city that was joined together within itself. 4There ascended the tribes, the tribes of God, testimony to Israel, to give thanks to the name of the Lord. 5For there were set thrones for judgment, thrones for the house of David. 6Request the welfare of Jerusalem; may those who love you enjoy tranquility. 7May there be peace in your wall, tranquility in your palaces. 8For the sake of my brethren and my companions, I shall now speak of peace in you. 9For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I shall beg for goodness for you.

Psalm 123

1A song of ascents. To You I lifted up my eyes, You Who dwell in heaven. 2Behold, as the eyes of slaves to the hand of their masters, as the eyes of a handmaid to the hand of her mistress, so are our eyes to the Lord our God, until He favors us. 3Favor us, O Lord, favor us, for we are fully sated with contempt. 4Our soul is fully sated with the ridicule of the complacent, the contempt [shown] to the valley of doves.

Psalm 124

1A song of ascents. Of David. Had it not been for the Lord Who was with us, let Israel declare now. 2Had it not been for the Lord Who was with us when men rose up against us, 3Then they would have swallowed us raw when their anger was kindled against us. 4Then the waters would have washed us away; illness would have passed over our soul. 5Then the wicked waters would have passed over our soul. 6Blessed is the Lord, Who did not give us as prey for their teeth. 7Our soul escaped like a bird from the hunters' snare; the snare broke, and we escaped. 8Our help is in the name of the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.

Psalm 125

1A song of ascents. Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which will not falter but will abide forever. 2Jerusalem has mountains around it, and the Lord is around His people from now and to eternity. 3For the rod of wickedness will not rest on the lot of the righteous, because the righteous do not stretch out their hands into wrongdoing. 4Be good, O Lord, to the good and to the upright in their hearts. 5And those who turn their crooked ways-may the Lord lead them away with the workers of iniquity, [and may there be] peace on Israel.

Psalm 126

1A song of ascents. When the Lord returns the returnees to Zion, we shall be like dreamers. 2Then our mouths will be filled with laughter and our tongues with songs of praise; then they will say among the nations, "The Lord has done great things with these." 3"The Lord has done great things with us; we were happy." 4Return, O Lord, our captivity like rivulets in arid land. 5Those who sow with tears will reap with song. 6He will go along weeping, carrying the valuable seeds; he will come back with song, carrying his sheaves.

Psalm 127

1A song of ascents about Solomon. If the Lord will not build a house, its builders have toiled at it in vain; if the Lord will not guard a city, [its] watcher keeps his vigil in vain. 2It is futile for you who arise early, who sit late, who eat the bread of toil, so will the Lord give to one who banishes sleep from himself. 3Behold, the heritage of the Lord is sons, the reward is the fruit of the innards. 4Like arrows in the hand of a mighty man, so are the sons of one's youth. 5Praiseworthy is the man who has filled his quiver with them; they will not be ashamed when they talk to the enemies in the gate.

Psalm 128

1A song of ascents. Praiseworthy is every man who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways. 2If you eat the toil of your hands, you are praiseworthy, and it is good for you. 3Your wife will be as a fruitful vine in the innermost parts of your house; your sons will be like olive shoots around your table. 4Behold that so will a man who fears the Lord be blessed. 5May the Lord bless you from Zion, and see the good of Jerusalem all the days of your life. 6And may you see children [born] to your children, [and see] peace upon Israel.

Psalm 129

1A song of ascents. Much have they distressed me from my youth, Israel will say now. 2Much have they distressed me from my youth, but also they have not prevailed against me. 3On my back, the plowmen plowed; they lengthened their furrow. 4The Lord is righteous; He will cut the ropes of the wicked. 5May all those who hate Zion be ashamed and retreat. 6May they be like the grass of the roofs, which, before it is plucked, withers. 7Of which the reaper did not fill his hand, nor the gatherer his arm. 8And the passers-by did not say, "May the blessing of the Lord be to you; we have blessed you in the name of the Lord."

Psalm 130

1A song of ascents. From the depths I have called You, O Lord. 2O Lord, hearken to my voice; may Your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications. 3O God, if You keep [a record of] iniquities, O Lord, who will stand? 4For forgiveness is with You, in order that You be feared. 5I hoped, O Lord; yea, my soul hoped, and I wait for His word. 6My soul is to the Lord among those who await the morning, those who await the morning. 7Israel, hope to the Lord, for kindness is with the Lord and much redemption is with Him. 8And He will redeem Israel from all their iniquities.

Psalm 131

1A song of ascent by David. O Lord, my heart was not haughty, nor were my eyes raised on high, and I did not pursue matters greater and more wondrous than I.

2I swear that I calmed and quieted my soul like a suckling on its mother; like a suckling was my soul with me.

3Israel, hope to the Lord from now to eternity.

Psalm 132

1A song of ascents. Remember, O Lord, onto David all his affliction. 2That he swore to the Lord, he vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob; 3That I shall not come into the tent of my house, and I shall not go up on the bed that was spread for me. 4I shall not give sleep to my eyes nor slumber to my pupils, 5Until I find a place for the Lord, dwellings for the Mighty One of Jacob. 6Behold we heard it in Ephrath; we found it in the fields of the forest. 7Let us come to His Tabernacles; let us prostrate ourselves to His footstool. 8Arise, O Lord, to Your resting place, You and the Ark of Your might. 9Let Your priests be clothed with righteousness, and let Your devout ones sing praises. 10For the sake of David Your servant, turn not away the face of Your anointed. 11The Lord has sworn to David in truth, from which He will never turn back, "Of the fruit of your body I shall seat upon your throne. 12If your sons keep My covenant, and this, My testimony, which I shall teach them, also their sons will sit on your throne forever." 13For the Lord has chosen Zion; He desired it for His habitation. 14This is My resting place forever; here I shall dwell for I desired it. 15I shall bless its provision; I shall sate its needy with bread. 16And its priests I shall clothe with salvation, and its devout ones will sing praises. 17There I shall cause David's horn to sprout; I have set up a lamp for My anointed. 18His enemies I shall clothe with shame, and upon him his crown will shine.

Psalm 133

1A song of ascents of David. Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brothers also to dwell together! 2As the good oil on the head runs down upon the beard, the beard of Aaron, which runs down on the mouth of his garments. 3As the dew of Hermon which runs down on the mountains of Zion, for there the Lord commanded the blessing, life forever.

Psalm 134

1A song of ascents. Behold, bless the Lord, all servants of the Lord who stand in the house of the Lord at night. 2Lift your hands in the holy place and bless the Lord. 3May the Lord bless you from Zion, He Who made heaven and earth.
